Course Unknowns:  There is a possibility with fair weather that this course could be a camping course for those who enjoy fall camping.  We will host at a location approx 20min from Saskatoon near Pike Lake.  If students wish they may camp.  Let’s see closer to the date how the weather is cooperating and make plans then.   Not mandatory! Stay tuned!

TENTATIVE PLAN:

  • Wednesday Oct. 19th 6:00-8:00pm (admin work out of the way!) At City location TBD
  • Saturday & Sunday 8:30am-6:30pm at rural location outside Saskatoon

LOCATION:  Rural park location 20 min outside Saskatoon near Pike Lake

COST:  $275+gst

40hr RECERTIFICATION:  If you need to RECERTIFY a current 40 hour certificate this course will suffice for you!  Please email back40training@gmail.com – cost will be $250.00, no manual will be provided.

WHAT TO BRING?

Students will be expected to be self-sufficient for the course.  Food, water, personal clothing needs, etc.  A “DAY PACk” of sorts that is similar to what you may reasonably take with you on your own outdoor adventures is necessary.  We encourage students to improvise using what they have however Back40 does provide larger equipment to practice with like tarps, sleeping bags, and ground pads.

Students WILL NEED to be prepared to spend the days outside.  Regardless of the weather.  For all day rain events we will try to organize an indoor space – but you might also end up under tarps!

Students should be self-sufficient for camping but please do not hesitate to inquire if you need any particular gear!

A detailed course outline and what to bring will be sent to all participants after registration is complete.

CERTIFICATION / RE-Certification:

Canadian Red Cross Wilderness First Aid inc. CPR/AED – valid 3yrs

PRE-REQUISITES: 20hr Remote First Aid (current)

Description

Do you LEAD, GUIDE, or participate in high risk activities in REMOTE places?

No one plans to get hurt.  So when we choose to pursue work or recreation in the outdoors, it is reasonable to assume that a certain amount of risk is always present.  That shouldn’t mean we do not go out and enjoy the thrill of adventure or the beauty of our backcountry.   Being more practically prepared and trusting in your own good sense can have a huge impact on how a backcountry emergency is managed.

This UPGRADE course expands upon the 20hr Remote First Aid to include

If you currently have a 20hr Remote First Aid you are eligible to participate in this UPGRADE course to bridge to the 40hr Wilderness First Aid.  You will be certified in the 40hr Wilderness First Aid inc. CPR-C/AED Upgrade

  • valid for 3 years
  • meets Occupational Health & Safety requirements

Remote First Aid content:

  • Patient assessment – expanding to add more details on vitals and long term patient care
  • Bleeding control – Wound Packing NEW
  • Advanced Fracture Management – Knee splinting, femur fractures, when to attempt re-alignment
  • Pelvic injuries – stabilization
  • Shoulder Dislocations – when and how to attempt reducing
  • Triage, long term care, group health and DECISION MAKING

Our Class is OUTDOORS!

We take great pride in using our outdoor classroom places to enhance the content of the Wilderness First Aid program.  Every minute spent outdoors adds real life value to the content.    This varies on location and season. All courses will have a back-up indoor option for when weather is unfavourable for the less active content.  We will ALWAYS have outdoor components even if we are set up indoors for some of the content.

What to Bring?

We ask that each participant bring a “day pack” that would be similar to what you would carry on a day trip or work trip outdoors so that you can use items you would likely have with you.  There is no wrong way to do anything when you are improvising.

  • A detailed WHAT TO BRING list will be sent to course participants upon registration and closer to the course date.
  • A personal helmet, PFD, and other recreational sporting gear is beneficial in this course.
  • Students must bring their own food, water, camp chairs, and personal needs.
