The 20hr Remote First Aid is led by Rebecca with Back40 Wilderness First Aid (Canadian Red Cross certified). The content and scenarios will be tailored to water activities in remote places. Students will challenge their skills in a realistic way using only what they have with guided improvisation and problem solving with their own good sense. Many incidents in the backcountry can be self-managed with good first aid, however students will also be equipped with skills to assist in more serious incidents that may require rescue. The SUP boards and personal gear will be integrated into scenarios for authenticity. This content will challenge but inspire students to trust their good sense and new skills.

First Aid Highlights:

CPR & drownings

Hypothermia and Heat Emergencies

The everyday things: sprains, strains, blisters, and small cuts

Fractures: fractures to self-extricate and fractures that need rescue

Head injuries

Lightning strikes

Extended care in the backcountry

Although the content (scenarios, equipment, and skill emphasis) is customized to SUP/paddling, the Canadian Red Cross Remote First Aid information can be found here.

Along with a 20hr Remote First Aid Certification, you will earn a Basic Flatwater SUP Skills Certification from Paddle Canada. Kelsey, with Kelsey’s Caravan, will immerse you in the world of mountain lake paddle boarding, teaching you the basics so you can paddle board on your own, with friends and/or family, with confidence. We will get plenty of time to practice these skills to make sure you feel comfortable with what you’ve learned.

SUP Highlights:

Falling off safely

Understanding weather and paddling conditions

Paddling while kneeling

Forward stroke, Braking stroke, Sweep stroke
